Do you have a candle that is “too nice to burn”? A bottle of wine you’re saving for a special occasion? Fancy lotion sitting untouched in a bathroom drawer? Maybe it’s the good china, the expensive perfume or a beautiful dress that is apparently waiting for the Queen of England to invite you to dinner.

We do this!

We save the good stuff for “someday”—and then someday keeps moving further down the calendar.

Well, what are we really waiting for?? Light the candle on a Tuesday. Open the good wine with takeout pizza. Wear the sparkly earrings to lunch. Put on the perfume even if your only big plans are Target and the grocery store. We have reached the age where we understand that ordinary days are actually most of our lives. Why are we saving all the good stuff for the occasional fancy one?

This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have things that feel special; indeed, it’s important to cherish the items that bring us joy and elevate our spirits. However, maybe the secret lies in the realization that WE get to decide what makes an occasion special. A dinner with a friend, filled with laughter and shared stories, absolutely counts. A beautiful Saturday morning, where the sun filters through the window and the world feels just right, definitely counts. Surviving a particularly long Monday, where you’ve overcome challenges and made it through, certainly counts! So, go find one thing you’ve been “saving” and enjoy it this week. Whether it’s that exquisite candle, that bottle of wine, or simply a moment of indulgence, allow yourself the pleasure of experiencing the good things in life today, rather than waiting for some elusive tomorrow. Life is too short to hold back on joy.
