Does anyone else have a closet FULL of clothes and still stand there saying, “I have nothing to wear!”? Somehow, I keep reaching for the same five shirts, three pairs of pants and one trusty jacket while dozens of other perfectly good clothes hang there patiently waiting for their big moment. Well, I recently learned a ridiculously simple closet hack that requires no organizing bins, no color coding and—most importantly—no entire Saturday spent trying on pants. Turn all of your hangers backward!

Here’s how it works: hang everything with the hook facing the opposite direction. After you wear something, return it to the closet with the hanger facing the normal way. In a few months, take a look. The backward hangers reveal the truth about what you actually wear—and it can be SHOCKING! Apparently, owning a cute blouse and actually wearing a cute blouse are two very different things. Who knew??

Move all the hangers still facing backwards to the back of your closet and you are left with your current, wearable wardrobe. Choosing an outfit from a tiny selection is like picking a snack from a vending machine—way easier than staring into the abyss of your closet, where clothes from every era of your life are staring back at you!

The best part is there are no rules and no pressure to immediately get rid of anything. But when it’s time to clean out your closet, you finally have proof that you have not worn that adorable-but-slightly-itchy sweater since the 1990s and you probably won't wear it again anytime soon. Donate it, pass it along to a friend, or keep it if it makes you happy. We’re middle-stage women—we can make our own rules!
