Don't miss a thing with The Hive Women and Buzz from The Hive!

For women in the "middle-stage," finding stylish clothes, that are appropriate for us, can be tricky. The days of wearing those cute little tube-tops and short dresses are long gone but we still don't want to look matronly or totally out-of-date. We feel young on the inside and we are certainly still fun so here are a few trends that will keep us looking sharp and a little sassy. See what's in and what's out for fall 2024.

What's In:

  • Wide Leg Jeans - Yes, wide leg silhouettes are dominating the denim scene. Full length styles are huge for fall, and they are easy to style with boots and other closed toe shoes. They’re elongating and flattering on all sizes and body types. If you aren’t a fan of wide leg jeans, pretty much anything goes right now. Looking current is more about how you style your jeans than what style of jeans you wear.

  • French Stripes - Stripes are going to be everywhere this fall, especially French (Breton) stripes - you know the ones that French sailors wore back in the day. This is such an easy way to add a current piece to your existing wardrobe, and there are lots of options for different widths and placement to flatter any body type.

  • Pop of Red - Red is a popular color this fall. While you can find plenty of red tops and dresses right now, just a pop of color makes a big statement and brings a little sass to your outfit. Try a red tennis shoe, Mary Jane slip-on, bag, belt or even a red ball cap.

  • Trousers - Relaxed trousers are huge this season, and have been for a minute. There are so many comfy styles and fabrics out there right now; there is a trouser for everyone. And, lucky for us, a super fashion-forward way to wear them is with sneakers - that juxtaposition of dressy and casual is so chic.

  • Leopard Print - Was leopard print every really out? Well, no, but it's being reintroduced a little bit differently this year. Leopard prints this time around look slightly more sophisticated and a little more abstract.

What's Out:

We aren't saying these trends are totally out - just a little less popular right now. Of course, if some of these items are your go-to favs, by all means wear them. If you love what you are wearing, you will feel good and look good.

jeggings
  • Jeggings - If you like to wear skinny jeans, a modern way to wear them is with a higher rise and with more of a slim straight cigarette leg, not the skin-tight legging style (jeggings) that we were wearing with long tunics several years ago.

tunic top
  • Tunic Tops - Although many of us loved a tunic top because it covers up all the jiggly bits so well, the look wasn't flattering on most of us. Now, a more sophisticated look is in.

long cardigan
  • Super Long Cardigans - Even though long cardigans aren't trending right now, sometimes they just make sense. If you love them, wear them with modern pieces (like a French striped top mentioned above) to give them a little update.

oversized shacket
  • Oversized Shackets - Shackets are still around, but most are not the big oversized ones that were all the rage a few years back. The boxy, cropped shirt jackets look more current right now.

leggings as pants
  • Leggings as Pants - Of course, the teenagers still wear them and if they are worn as athleisure or to the gym, they are fine. But as everyday pants, we should probably pass. For middle-stage women who what to look polished and put together, we should lean toward those wide leg jeans or trousers mentioned above.

Remember, trends are just that. They come and go, and some stick around longer than others. If it’s not your style, just skip it and if you still love it, wear it. At the end of the day, you should wear what you feel good in, no matter what the “trend reports” say!
