Don't miss a thing with The Hive Women and Buzz from The Hive!

I used to think “granny sandals” were strictly for (1) people with sensible insurance plans and (2) women named Edith who own at least one decorative goose in their kitchen. And yet, here we are: the internet has decided these chunky, Velcro-y, orthopedic-adjacent sandals are… fashionable. Not just acceptable. Not just “fine for running to Target.” Fashionable. I’m as surprised as my feet are comfortable.

What Are “Granny Sandals,” Exactly?

Picture a sandal that looks like it has a responsible bedtime. Thick sole. Wide straps. Sometimes a buckle, sometimes Velcro (the sound of Velcro is basically the theme song of practicality). Neutral colors, outdoorsy vibes, and enough support to make your podiatrist whisper, “Finally.”

Who’s Wearing Them?

Everyone. Truly. Gen Z is stomping around in them like they invented arch support. Influencers are pairing them with socks. Moms are wearing them to soccer practice, farmers markets, and the school pickup line—because we’re basically running a small logistics company every day. And yes, celebrities are in on it too, which is how you know it’s real: once someone with a personal trainer and a chef embraces a “comfort shoe,” the trend is officially unstoppable.

Why Are They So Popular?

  • Comfort finally won. After years of pretending thin straps and zero support were “cute,” we’re collectively choosing peace.

  • They go with everything now. Dresses, jeans, linen pants, bike shorts, athleisure—granny sandals don't judge .

  • We’re in our practical era. The world is chaotic. Your footwear shouldn’t be.

  • They’re a little bit ironic. Wearing something that looks like it came from a 1997 family vacation photo is somehow… fashion.

  • They feel like permission. Permission to walk farther, stand longer, and live your life without planning your route around benches.

Three Brands People Seem to Love

Chacos - Durable, exceptional arch support, and highly adjustable strap system make them ideal for every possible activity. The minute you slide into them, you understand why people act like they’re a lifestyle choice.

Teva - Sporty, sturdy, and ready for anything from a lake trip to chasing a toddler or pet who just discovered freedom.

Clarks - If comfort had a customer service department, it would work at Clarks. Cushioned, classic, and quietly confident.

Plot Twist: Older Women Are the Trend‑Setters Now

Here’s the thing: older women have been wearing “granny sandals” for years, and we weren’t doing it to be cool. We were doing it because we like our feet, and we have places to be. We chose function on purpose—while everyone else was out there limping for the aesthetic.

And now the fashion world has circled back and discovered our secret: comfort is not the enemy of style. So yes, I’ll be over here in my sturdy little sandals, feeling smug and supported. If you need me, follow the sound of Velcro and the quiet confidence of a woman who has nothing left to prove—except maybe that you can look cute while having full contact with the ground.
