Red light therapy and infrared saunas have been fast growing trends in the health and wellness industries. Both offer various health benefits; however, even with similarities, the two have marked differences. The primary difference is what generates therapeutic benefits in our bodies: in one case, the benefits are derived from light, and in the other, they are derived from heat.

A quick review on red light therapy: Red light therapy utilizes red and Near-Infrared (NIR) light that can be absorbed within our cells and essentially energize them to repair, regenerate, and function more effectively. Red light therapy does not produce heat and sessions in a red light bed last 15-20 minutes. There are many affordable home products on the market to be used in the comfort of your own home without breaking the bank. Now lets discuss Infrared saunas which are sometimes referred to as “full spectrum” saunas. Unlike a traditional sauna, infrared saunas don’t heat the air around you. Instead, infrared saunas derive their heat from infrared heat lamps to direct heat toward

the body, warming it directly. The Mid-Infrared (MIR) and Far-Infrared (FIR) wavelengths easily penetrate human tissue, heating you up from the inside for therapeutic benefits.

There are many scientific studies supporting the positive health benefits obtained from infrared sauna sessions. It is recommended that a session last 25-45 minutes and can be enjoyed up to 5 times a week. Let’s take a look at some of these benefits.

Metabolic Improvement and Weight Management: while relaxing in the sauna, the heat is increasing your heart rate and metabolic activity, mimicking the effects of moderate exercise. Some studies report a single session can burn up to 600 calories!

Detoxification: deep sweating is the body’s natural detoxification mechanism, which helps eliminate toxins, environmental pollutants and heavy metals that create a burden on the body.

Relaxation and Stress Relief: Infrared sauna therapy activates the parasympathetic nervous system, the body’s natural relaxation response. This helps to reduce cortisol levels, alleviate mental tension, and promote a sense of deep relaxation, which improves mood, cognitive function, and overall resilience against stress.

Improved Circulation, Muscle Recovery & Pain Relief: the heat from infrared saunas increases blood flow, which aides in improved circulation and delivery of rich nutrients and oxygen to tissues. In turn, this increased blood flow aides in muscle recovery and chronic pain relief.

Cardiovascular Health: studies suggest that infrared saunas may help lower blood pressure, improve blood vessel function, and reduce the risk of heart-related conditions.

Immune System Support: Infrared saunas can raise core body temperature, potentially helping to strengthen the immune system by stimulating white blood cell function and the body’s natural defense mechanisms.

Reduced Inflammation: the heat from infrared saunas may help reduce inflammation throughout the body.

Skin Health: Infrared wavelengths penetrate deep into the skin’s layers, accelerating collagen production and enhancing cellular repair. This leads to improved elasticity, reduced wrinkles, and radiant complexion. The increased sweating process also facilitates the removal of impurities, minimizing breakouts and improving overall skin tone and texture.

Improved Sleep Quality: relaxation and stress reduction induced by infrared sauna use can contribute to better sleep. Better sleep quality equals overall better health.

In conclusion, the use of traditional saunas have been considered therapeutic for centuries. With the introduction of infrared technology, the infrared sauna is proving to be a useful tool in the health and wellness industry for a multitude of health benefits.
