Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver

Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver

When it’s my turn to host book club I always stress about what to choose, and while this book was long (560 pages) it stuck with me – and the group loved it as well. The story is set in the southern Appalachia mountains and follows the main character, known as Demon, throughout his difficult life. Born to a single mother in a run-down trailer with an absentee-then-dead father, he had no shortage of challenges in a life filled with ups and even more downs. The book is such an interesting read into not only Demon’s character, but the lives and cultures of those in and out of his life. The opioid crisis in that area of the country in particular is certainly a depressing topic, but overall this is a beautifully written novel that you won’t soon forget.

Beach Read by Emily Henry

Beach Read by Emily Henry

At this time of year especially, with vacations coming up or being wished for, it’s always fun to find a book that’s more of a light and quick read.  Aptly named “Beach Read” this book is about two authors that wind up meeting when they are staying in rented beach houses next door to each other… both trying to get past their current writers block.  January is a romance writer and Augustus writes literary fiction.  They end up deciding to swap genres and teach each other some of their writing process. Of course, they end up in a romance of their own – and it’s set on a beach – so it has all the makings of, well… a beach read.

i'm glad my mom died by Jennette McCurdy

I’m Glad my Mom Died by Jeanette McCurdy

Every once in a while I challenge myself to read a memoir to change things up a little, and you have to admit… the title here just kind of grabs you.  As a “middle stage” woman, iCarly was a new show in the early 2000’s when my daughter was 11, and while I didn’t catch every episode I knew enough to know of her witty, sarcastic, tomboy character, Sam. What I did not know is the life Jeanette led that got her to that point and the pain she endured with an overbearing – and downright mean – mother who was trying to live out her own dreams through her daughter.  A quick and interesting read – whether or not you have any idea what iCarly or who Jeanette McCurdy is.
